Welcome to the Drive Around Australia (DAA) homepage. DAA was one of the most
exciting things we've done for some time and the great result is really
pleasing. We're also proud to have worked with our event partners Holden
Special Vehicles and Repco, and meeting as many of you as we did on the
journey.
During the drive we called in at selected Holden
dealers, Repco stores, schools and other great events like the Deni Ute
Muster. Overall we completed 38,999 km, visited 371 towns, broke a world
record and met lots of interesting people. You can retrace the journey through
the driver's weblog, accessed via the link to the right.
We've put together a couple of videos describing the Drive. Featuring HRT's
Mark Skaife you can select either a
three minute (4.96MB) or a
thirty second (772KB) version. They're low resolution so please don't use
full screen, please contact us at the link below if you want a high resolution
copy.

The Drive Around the World (DATW) organisation recently completed a 16-month,
66,000-kilometer drive around the world to raise awareness and funds to help
cure Parkinson's Disease.
Mobil was a key sponsor of the journey and supplied Mobil 1 motor oil,
transmission fluids and gear lubricants to protect their engines,
transmissions and gears during the trek's extreme weather and unpredictable
road conditions. The expedition crew made only one oil change in their trip,
and they credit Mobil 1 with getting them through safely to their many
destinations around the world.

The Drive Around Australia (DAA) project was based on the amazing DATW
journey. We planned to drive a HSV Z Series Maloo R8 Ute (the World’s Fastest
Ute) 37,000 km on all kinds of roads using Mobil 1 in the engine, without a
single oil change. The car's engine was sealed at the start by the RACV and
evaluated for condition at the completion of the journey to highlight the
superior protection of Mobil 1.

The Maloo began its journey on May 12th, 2006 in Melbourne and endured a
challenging 6 month trek around Australia. The Drive culminated in a
triumphant finale at the Bathurst 1000 in October 2006 where, in front of the
RPM TV cameras, the NRMA supervised the inspection of the top end of the
mighty LS2 engine.

In laboratory tests, Mobil 1’s SuperSyn Anti-Wear technology keeps engines
performing like new, even after 340,000 kilometers. But the real test is in
the real world. DAA was a real world demonstration of the outstanding
protection offered by Mobil 1 when operating in extreme conditions – highways,
back roads, mountains, deserts and stop-go in peak hour.

These are the same conditions that ordinary motorists may face on a daily
basis i.e. real world conditions. This enables Mobil to differentiate itself
versus all other motor oil by demonstrating superior engine protection.
And as you see from the results Mobil 1 lived up its promise - outstanding
protection under extreme conditions!

The performance reserve of Mobil 1 under all conditions is impressive. That's
why we put the oil through its paces in all kinds of conditions. Cold starts,
hot running, dusty conditions and peak hour traffic are just some of the
conditions the Maloo experienced in its travels around this wide brown land.
But that's not all. In addition these everyday conditions we wanted to put the
oil to the test at the top of its performance range. At the Woomera test
facility in outback South Australia on May 26th, 2006 Holden Racing Team
champion Mark Skaife guided the Maloo over the flying kilometer set a new
Guinness World Record for the world's fastest production utility.

It's official!
|
It's official! The HSV Z Series Maloo R8 is the World's Fastest Ute! With a
two-way average speed of 271.44kmh over the flying kilometer and a one-way top
speed in excess of 277kmh the Mobil 1 Maloo easily eclipsed the previous
record. A testament to Australian engineering and Mobil 1!

The Drive Around Australia hero car is a HSV Z Series Maloo R8 Ute auto in
Sting Red. Fitted with the HSV spec 6.0 Ltr LS2 V8 the performance reserve is
enormous. All HSVs are factory filled with Mobil 1 that also has an enormous
performance reserve. Mobil 1 10W-30 is the oil specified for GM LS1 and LS2
engines and is also recommended for many other cars.
Use the
product selection toolkit or call the Mobil Lubeline on Freecall 1800 033
863 to see which Mobil 1 is right for your car.
The HSV Z Series Maloo R8 DAA Maloo hero car is completely standard, including
the optional six-pot brake package, and had no special preparation (apart from
the stickers!) before setting out on the Drive or for the Guinness World
Record run. It's truly a world-class performance car.

Don't try this at home!
|
The Drive Around Australia was being performed under controlled conditions.
Regular oil sampling and oil filter changes at the manufacturers recommended
intervals means that we kept track of how the oil was performing. Unless you
have access to an oil sampling programme that will alert you change your oil
when necessary we always recommend you change your oil and oil filter at the
manufacturers recommended intervals.
The world record run was
also conducted by experts on closed roads under carefully controlled and
supervised conditions and with the full sanction of the authorities
concerned. Mobil does not endorse excessive speed or reckless behaviour.
