Situation

A Missouri bottling plant operates two Cemco fillers, running approximately 8,000 hours per year. The units are equipped with conveying bearing systems, which are lubricated with extreme pressure grease. Operating in wet conditions with frequent washdowns, the filler system experienced a number of problems, with some components lacking lubrication and others having abnormally high grease consumption. To address these issues, the filling department approached ExxonMobil engineers for an alternative lubricant solution capable of improving reliability and reducing grease costs.

Recommendation

After evaluating the bearing system and operating environment, ExxonMobil engineers recommended transitioning the filler systems to Mobilgrease XHP™ 221 bearing grease. After four years in service, Mobilgrease XHP 221 bearing grease continues to successfully endure extreme operating temperatures and rigorous production schedules, while also resisting aggressive water washdowns and preventing grease line clogging and potential equipment breakdown. The company also reports significantly reducing unscheduled downtime and lowering grease usage from 46,160 lbs to 10,480 lbs – a reduction of 77 percent. In addition, safety was improved with less residual grease around the machinery.
