Situation
Ace Pack Company, Ltd. paper cup forming machines (30 units) were lubricated by a competitive conventional ISO viscosity grade 220 gear oil since commissioning. The oil drain interval was limited to 6 months due to oil breakdown and the build-up of sludge in the gear drive sump.
Recommendation
After the completion of an on-site investigation, the Mobil™ Lubrication Engineer recommended using Mobil SHC Cibus™ 220 food grade synthetic lubricant in place of the conventional competitor’s synthetic gear oil. Lubrication performance was monitored using Mobil Serv Lubricant Analysis.
Result
Since converting to Mobil SHC Cibus 220 food grade lubricant, the oil drain interval (ODI) of the cup forming machine gear drives crankshaft and bearing has been extended from 6 months to 12 months, with an estimated lube oil saving value of US $28,500 per year. Paper cups productivity has increased to 648,000 per year, with estimated annual productivity values of US $21,600. In addition, preventive maintenance has been reduced by 90 man-hours per year, and corrective maintenance downtime has also been reduced.
