Application lubricant filter

Determining filter size / efficiency

What filtration efficiency (pore size) is optimum for my application?

The choice of filtration pore size and capacity can be a tricky question, as the optimum solution depends on how much and what kind of external contamination the application sees, the pressure drop allowed by the system across the filter, the viscosity of the oil and many other interdependent variables.

If performing an internal filtration study, decrease the filtration pore size in modest steps to see how the filter change intervals are affected. It is also important to understand the beta ratio or percentage of particles a filter will pull out of the oil. Higher beta means you pull out a greater percentage of a given particle size. You may be able to benefit from higher beta ratio filters without decreasing the nominal filter pore size rating.

For highly contaminated, large oil reservoir systems, periodic filtration and flushing by an external service may be more effective.
