Papelera Industrial Potosina, a leading Mexican paper producer, operates a paper machine containing multiple primary gearboxes. Lubricated with a conventional mineral oil, the paper machine was experiencing operating temperatures exceeding 85°C (185°F), which accelerated oil oxidation rate, leading to significant unscheduled downtime and oil drain intervals every six months. Looking to improve equipment productivity, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers to identify a lubricant solution capable of extending oil drain intervals and reducing unscheduled downtime.

ExxonMobil engineers recommended the company switch to Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 synthetic gear oil. Formulated with a synthetic base oil having exceptional thermal stability and oxidation resistance properties, Mobil SHC Gear 320 oil is specifically designed to provide outstanding performance in extreme conditions, such as those encountered in the mill’s gear drives.

After switching to Mobil SHC Gear 320 synthetic gear oil, the company has reported a reduction in the paper machine’s operating temperature by 15°C (27°F), as well as increased productivity, significantly longer oil drain intervals, lower maintenance costs and less unscheduled downtime. These improvements have resulted in a company-estimated savings of US $37,032 over two years.
