A Texas-based petrochemical manufacturer operates two Quincy air compressors to help power operations. These units are lubricated with a competitive synthetic air compressor oil with an average oil drain interval of 8,000 hours (12 months). In an effort to optimize production efficiency, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers to provide a lubricant solution capable of further extending oil drain intervals while increasing compressor reliability.
After evaluating the application, ExxonMobil engineers recommended transitioning to Mobil SHC™ Rarus 46 next-generation synthetic compressor oil. Formulated with synthetic hydrocarbon fluids and a high technology additive system, Mobil SHC™ Rarus 46 is designed to provide exceptional resistance to oxidation and thermal degradation, improving equipment protection and prolonging oil life. In addition, the engineers recommended periodic filter changes and the use of Mobil ServSM Lubricant Analysis to monitor equipment and oil condition, and to help establish the optimum oil drain interval.
Since transitioning to Mobil SHC™ Rarus 46 synthetic compressor oil, the company has extended oil drain intervals beyond 24,000 hours (36 months), with the results from routine Mobil ServSM Lubricant Analysis showing that the lubricant is suitable for continued use. These extended drain intervals have been able to help reduce the facility’s environmental footprint through reduced waste oil disposal, and has enhanced employee safety by reducing interaction with the air compressor. Overall, the extended drain intervals, combined with the outstanding component protection provided by Mobil SHC™ Rarus 46, have delivered a company-estimated three-year savings of $5,780 in related maintenance costs.
