Situation

Ash Grove Cement had been lubricating the open gears of its two kilns with an asphalt-based oil. Looking to optimize equipment performance and reduce lubricant consumption, the company reached out to ExxonMobil for an alternative lubricant solution.

Recommendation

ExxonMobil engineers recommended transitioning to Mobilgear SHC™ 22M ultra high viscosity synthetic gear oil, designed specifically for use in heavily loaded, low-speed open gears where it offers low-temperature fluidity and can be pumped over long distances and used in standard spray application equipment. Additionally, ExxonMobil engineers recommended using recycled Mobilgear SHC 22M gear oil for drive chain lubrication to get a second use out of the oil, thereby reducing expensive disposal costs.

Result

After transitioning to Mobilgear SHC 22M synthetic gear oil, Ash Grove Cement has experienced a substantial reduction in nozzle plugging, gear buildup and disposal. These benefits have helped optimize the reliability of its cement kilns by streamlining maintenance, reducing total lubricant consumption and increasing spray intervals between relubrication periods, generating a company-estimated annual savings of US $41,990.
