Situation

A leading Colombian oil exploration and production company operates Lufkin and American crank balanced pumping units at its crude oil well in Huila. The pumping units’ intermediate shaft bearings were experiencing frequent failures, as water contamination would cause the grease used in the bearings to lose its consistency. In an effort to reduce maintenance downtime, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers for an alternative lubricant solution capable of enhancing equipment protection and extending performance lifespan.

Recommendation

After performing a comprehensive equipment lube survey, ExxonMobil engineers recommended transitioning to Mobilgrease XHP™ 222 bearing grease. Designed with lithium complex thickener technology, Mobilgrease XHP 222 grease is formulated to provide exceptional adhesion, structural stability and resistance to water contamination.

Result

Since transitioning to Mobilgrease XHP 222 bearing grease, maintenance personnel have successfully reduced bearing failures from an average of 14 to one per year. This has helped reduce equipment downtime by an estimated 300 hours and lower spare parts purchasing costs.
