Mobil 1™: Meeting the new GF-7 industry standards

Industry standards are changing, but our standard of excellence is not. Mobil 1™ motor oils will continue to meet or exceed the new category requirements to keep your engine running like new.

The International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) recently announced the new GF-7 engine oil category, aimed at improving fuel economy and enhancing engine capabilities for passenger vehicles. The GF-7 category is effective as of March 31, 2025, and every new level of standard will be backward compatible with the previous generation going forward.

Mobil 1™ and Mobil™ Full Synthetic motor oils will meet or exceed ILSAC GF-7 specifications.

When can I purchase the new Mobil™ GF-7 engine oils?

You can expect to start seeing the new Mobil ILSAC GF-7 engine oils on store shelves from late 2025 into 2026.

How can I find out if my vehicle requires a GF-7 engine oil?

Which viscosity grades will GF-7 apply to?

0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30 are GF-7A capable.
0W-16 is GF-7B capable.

GF-6 was the prior ILSAC engine oil performance standard aimed at improving fuel economy and enhancing engine capabilities for passenger cars. GF-6 provided low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear protection while improving piston cleanliness and fuel economy.

What changed with GF-6 standards?

The popularization of turbocharged engines among Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) led to a focus on turbocharger-specific standards for GF-6. The primary purpose of GF-6 was to combat problems with LSPI, a common issue with turbocharged engines. As in the 2018 upgrade of API SN to API SN Plus, the ILSAC GF-6 standards also required added protection against the harmful effects of LSPI in today’s modern turbocharged engines.

What is LSPI and how does it affect my engine?

LSPI creates excessive pressure within the engine’s cylinders, which can cause permanent damage to cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings, connecting rods and spark plugs. Did GF-6 apply to every viscosity grade?

Almost. There was a split between 0W-16 viscosity grade engine oils and all other existing ILSAC viscosity grades. GF-6A represented existing ILSAC viscosity grades and GF-6B represented 0W-16 viscosity grade oils only.
