Putting our miles where our mouth is
From our research facility in New Jersey to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (and 46 states in between), our ultimate motor oil was put to the test in two used vehicles: a Chevrolet Equinox SUV and a Ford Fusion sedan. Both vehicles traversed mountains, deserts, city blocks and highways, experiencing temperatures as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Every 5,000 miles, the vehicles made pit stops to get their oil tested. Our comprehensive lubricant analysis tested the performance of used Mobil 1 Annual Protection samples across these three categories:

Test for wear metals
Wear metal results indicated outstanding protection of critical engine parts.
Modern engines are made of many metal parts and, over time, these parts can experience wear due to friction. One job of the motor oil is to provide protection between metal contact surfaces under all conditions. Measuring wear metals, such as iron, can help determine how well the oil is protecting the engine. Generally, high concentrations of iron can be a sign that there is significant metal-to-metal contact occurring.
Oxidation and nitration results confirmed the oil resisted severe degradation and provided longer-lasting protection.
Oxidation and nitration occur when the oil reacts with oxygen and nitrogen, and causes the oil molecules to break down. Oxidation and nitration measurements are useful indicators of how much the oil has degraded over its lifespan. Factors such as temperature, time and contaminant concentration can increase the rate of oxidation and nitration. Generally, high oxidation and nitration measurements are evidence that severe oil degradation has occurred.
Total acid number (TAN) and total base number (TBN) results validated the retention of key performance ingredients throughout the 20,000-mile test.
Motor oils consist of additives that help prevent harmful deposits and sludge formation. TAN and TBN measure the basicity and acidity of oil, respectively, and indicate the concentration of additives remaining in oil. As oil ages and degrades, it is important to monitor the TBN to ensure the additives are plentiful enough to suspend harmful deposits. Generally, lower TBN can be an indication that oil has undergone substantial degradation.
Viscosity control results showed that the oil stayed in-grade at each point during the 20,000-mile test, providing protection throughout the oil change interval.
Kinematic viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius is a standard measurement to determine a lubricant’s viscosity at temperatures commonly found during engine operation. Oil must stay within a defined viscosity range to ensure it is properly lubricating the engine. When oil is too thin, it cannot provide proper lubrication; engine parts can rub against one another, leading to increased wear and potential engine failure. When oil is too thick, it increases friction between engine parts; difficulty transporting the oil throughout the engine can lead to decreased fuel economy and potential engine failure.
We not only analyzed the oil after each of the four pit stops, we performed a thorough engine tear down and inspection when the trip was finished. All engine parts measured in the Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Fusion at the end of the test indicated excellent sludge protection.
Sludge ratings are made on a cleanliness merit basis. A rating of 10 designates a part completely free of sludge, and a lower rating number designates a part with increased accumulations of sludge.

20K Road Trip reaction: What independent labs are saying
After the road trip was over, we sent additional oil samples to four independent labs to provide their own analysis. And we received the ultimate affirmation of our ultimate motor oil, Mobil 1 Annual Protection. All four labs confirmed that Mobil 1 Annual Protection was up to the challenge of the 20K Road Trip, having tested the oil’s performance against three categories:
Extended oil life
Longer oil change intervals require advanced protection. Every lab proved that Mobil 1 Annual Protection extended oil life by staying in-grade, minimizing oxidation and retaining additives throughout the entire 20K Road Trip.†
Used oil analysis looks for signs of wear. After the 20K Road Trip was over, the used oil from Mobil 1 Annual Protection showed minimal concentrations of wear metals.‡ One lab had the following to say about each vehicle:
“Universal averages show typical wear for a 2.4L EcoTec engine after ~5,700 miles of oil use. This oil has 20,000 miles on it, and metals are good for the long interval.”
